Honoring the Past, Preserving the Future

The Carbondale Cemetery is a community-based, non-denominational burial ground located in Westside, Mississippi. It has gladly served local families in Claiborne and surrounding counties for over 200 years. Submerged in history and tradition, the Carbondale Cemetery, bordered by the beautiful countryside, provides a quiet and peaceful setting for families to honor their loved ones who rest there.

The Carbondale Cemetery Association is made up of a group of volunteers who serve as the Officers of the Association and who are charged with caring for the Cemetery and safeguarding its prolonged existence in the community. The Association is committed to preserving and enhancing the Cemetery’s natural beauty and heritage, as well as preserving the history of the association. The Cemetery was originally known as the Cochrandale Community Cemetery, a Caucasian cemetery. Records show that a George Cochran Murdoch was buried there in 1812. His stone, along with others, were moved to the wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Later, this section of land was purchased by Reverend Milligan Newsome and his wife Harriett. They donated that section of land to the Community for a cemetery. The name changed to Carbondale Cemetery.

Names on some of the oldest tombstones continue to be the names of local families who have remained in the Westside Community. Perhaps most importantly, the Carbondale Cemetery is home to many of our nation’s war heroes. Their graves are marked with American Flags on Veteran’s Day as a symbol of their dedication to our country.

The Officers and Caretaker for the Carbondale Cemetery take great pride in keeping the grounds well-maintained and providing excellent, caring service to all families who choose this as their loved one’s final resting place. Additional information regarding burial options are available on our website.
